How to solve customization issues for Places bar

Symptoms

After customizing the Places bar, the changes are not kept.

Note: This might happen on Windows 10 only.

Cause

It is probably caused by the default settings of Windows 10 that restrict access to the registry key.

Solution

  • Make sure that BricsCAD is closed.
  • You need to enable the customization of the Places bar from the Local Group Policy Editor.

    To do that:

    1. Go to the Windows Start and type Edit group policy or open the Run window and type gpedit.msc.

The Local Group Policy Editor dialog box opens.

    2. On the left side of the dialog box, navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer > Common Open File Dialog.
    3. Double-click on Items displayed in Places Bar to open the Items displayed in Places Bar dialog box.
    4. Change the state from Not configured to Enabled, then click Apply and OK.
  • After that, follow the next steps:
    1. Right-click on the BricsCAD icon and select Run as administrator option.
    2. Make sure that the USESTANDARDOPENFILEDIALOG system variable is 0 (Off).
    3. Set your options for the Places bar: PLACESBARFOLDER1, PLACESBARFOLDER2, PLACESBARFOLDER3, and PLACESBARFOLDER4.
    4. Close BricsCAD and check again if the changes remain.
