Method

Select the geometry to dimension, then specify the dimension line position.

The command is used for quickly generating a series of baseline or continued dimensions for each selected entity, and can be used in one of the following modes:

  • Advanced mode allows placement of multiple dimensions with an adjustable level of details. This is the default mode.
  • Classic mode exits the command after placing a dimension.

QDIM advanced mode works on supported entities displayed in viewports in paper space.

To dimension entities in a viewport, use the following steps:

  1. Launch the QDIM command in paper space.
  2. Select entities in the viewport one by one or use a window selection.
  3. Press Enter to create the dimensions.
Note: QDIM can dimension entities in only one viewport per command session.

QDIM Advanced mode works on the results of VIEWBASE in paper space.

To dimension entities on a VIEWBASE result, use the following steps:

  1. Launch the QDIM command in paper space.
  2. Select the entities on the VIEWBASE result one by one or use a window selection.
  3. Press Enter to create the dimensions.
Note:
  • Pre-selecting a block and launching the QDIM command creates dimensions for the entities contained in the block. To dimension one or multiple entities nested in a block individually, launch the QDIM command first, then select the entities one by one or use a window selection.
  • The command opens a contextual ribbon to improve accuracy and provide easier access to command options. The ribbon includes panels for editing the command mode, dimension type, style and layer.
  • The current dimension style, as defined by the DIMSTYLE system variable, and the layer for new dimensions, as defined by the DIMLAYER system variable, are also available to be edited in the contextual ribbon under the Style and Layer ribbon panel.
  • The spacing between staggered or baseline dimension lines, as defined by the DIMDLI system variable, can also be edited in the contextual ribbon under the Options ribbon panel.

Options within the command

Continuous
Creates a succession of continuing dimensions with dimension lines positioned end-to-end on a single continuous line.
Staggered
Creates dimensions with dimension lines offset by a fixed distance. Shorter dimensions use the innermost dimension lines, while longer dimensions use progressively outer dimension lines.
Baseline
Creates a set of stacked dimensions starting from the same baseline. Dimensions closer to the baseline use the innermost dimension lines, while dimensions farther from the baseline use progressively outer dimension lines.
Ordinate
Creates a set of ordinate dimensions with a single extension line with an X or Y value for each feature.
Radius
Creates dimensions for the selected arcs and circles and displays the radius value.
Diameter
Creates dimensions for the selected arcs and circles and displays the diameter value.
datumPoint
Sets a new reference point for baseline and ordinate dimensions.
Edit
Edits dimension points from the computed point set.
Add
Adds dimension points.
Remove
Removes dimension points.
eXit
Closes editing and returns to the previous prompt.
seTtings
Sets the entity snap priority.
EndPoint
Sets the entity snap priority to endpoint.
Intersection
Sets the entity snap priority to intersection.
CLassic
Sets the command to classic mode.
Advanced
Sets the command to advanced mode. This is the default option.
Level of detail
Provides an adjustable level of detail.
All
Adds all dimensions in a specific direction.
Position aware
Dimensions only the vertices that are not occluded by other geometry.
Extents
Dimensions only the extents of the selected set.
Note: If the HOTKEYASSISTANT system variable is On, the Hotkey Assistant widget displays. Repeatedly press the Ctrl key during the dynamic display of the QDIM command to cycle the level of detail options.
